FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q.) What is 802.11b?
A.) 802.11b is a standard set forth by IEEE that addresses wireless data networking in the FCC unlicensed 2.4 GHz Industrial/Scientific/Medical (ISM) band, using Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology to transmit the signal. For vendor compatibility, refer to http://www.wirelessethernet.com

Q.) Will my 802.11a compatible laptop work?
A.) No, 802.11a operates in the 5 GHz unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) frequency range and is not compatible with 802.11b.

Q.) Do I have to register or sign up to use the LAN?
A.) Not at this point. If you're within range of the wireless network, you'll be assigned an IP address automatically (using DHCP), and you'll be able to access the internet immediately.

Q.) Are there wired Ethernet connections available for public use?
A.) No, this is not an option at this time due to cabling expense and design of the airport.

Q.) What about security? Could other people on the wireless network access my computer or could I get a virus?
A.) Yes, this is a public network and attacks could take place. You should be responsible for the security of your own system. Installing Personal Firewall software and keeping your anti-virus software up-to-date can protect you from these types of problems.
